not always hatin' on winter

Because I'm such a winter-hater you'll understand why these pics are so prec.
It means I was out with the boys... in the cold.
For longer than it takes to go from the house to the car and the car to Target and Target back to the car and the car back to the house.
I actually threw some snowballs.
Watch out, World.
Jon asked me, "are you SURE you want to come out, Mom?!"
So like......how many Mom Points is this worth, anyway?!
Awww.....come on. I love these guys.
I did it for love.

Caleb might look like he's smiling but he's actually squirming and squinting with the cold of the snow and the flakes falling in his face. He hates winter almost as much as I do--but tries really hard to like it.
Bless his heart.

These two, on the other hand, embrace winter and all it has to offer.
Matthias' new prayer every day is that he can have some hot cocoa.
Hey--it's good stuff (especially the way I make it)
You want some hot with your cocoa?!
Jon asked if I'd take a pic of his snow angel.
Yeah.....I'm not exactly sure what he thought it would look like.

WINNER, WINNER!
Onesmallhappyfamily--you are the winner of the bookmark giveaway. YAY!
Let me know which one you'd like and I'll send it your way...
A big, happy hot dog friday to you all!

happenings

Hey Blogger Buddies, How are you? Hope you all had a super time w/your fam celebrating the birthday of our Savior. Did you eat as much as I did? So much more fun last year when I was wearing elastic-waisted prego pants. Is that TMI?
This week I've got the kiddos home. How fun is that?! Lazy mornings in pjs until.....whenever. Lots of playtime with all those new toys. New books to read. Extra time to chat....
A trip to the museum! So. Fun.

Hope you all have a super week.
I'll check in again after the new year--and I hope you do, too.
I've got TONS of new blogging ideas.
See you all in 2011!
Love, Laurie for the fam

la casa de G-bread

Bad news: Justin's Packer jersey did not bring home a victory yesterday. Boo.
Good news: he knows if he's watching football he's always got a child who'll watch with him.

And it's not one of the ones you'd think...

Charity loves a little snuggle time anytime

During halftime of the Packers game the James boys made some gingerbread houses.

They caved in more than once...

and were made with incredibly sticky frosting...

that was (apparantely) incredibly tasty as well...

For some, it was all about the candy cane kisses

I would like to say this year's houses were more impressive than 2009

But I will say that we had a lot of fun getting powdered sugar frosting

EVERY.WHERE.

Speaking of frosting...don't miss the Cake Boss' new show on TLC tonight (9/8c). Bakers competing with their fondant skills for a chance to work with Buddy. Well, that and $50K.

Poor Buddy tries to be all tough. But his sister? She'd make me cry. If your cake has issues, she'll tell you...and she'll tell you like it is whether you can handle it or not. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Happy Monday, All!

good things come in little packages.

The first couple of years we celebrated Jesus' birthday as the James fam,
I made a special cake or pie that we'd put a candle in and sing
"Happy Birthday" to Jesus.

One Christmas
(the one when I had a 3 year old, 10 month old...and was prego. yeah...)
I forgot...until we were in the car on our way to our Christmas Eve service.
No problem. I'd just stop on the way home and grab something from the grocery store.
Give a prego woman a break, right?!
Problem: By the time we left the service, all grocery stores had closed for the holiday.
Wait a minute.....what is that glow?

Beautiful. A Christmas miracle.

As Justin exited the building with the
Thornton Gas Station box of
Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes,
I smiled an "exhausted baker, tired mommy, keeper of traditions,
problem of the missing birthday cake solved" kinda smile.
Some traditions you just have to keep. Stress-free ones?!
Definite keepers.

Birthday Cake for Jesus 2010
(not from Thornton Gas Station, but stress-free none-the-less)

It's my way of having my cake and eating it, too.

Have a super day in this Christmas season--
keepin it really about Jesus, All!

oh.so.fun weekend

What a fun couple of days. Our weekend couldn't have been any better.

Okay. Maybe I'd have taken out two (very scary, especially when combined) words:

Chili. Dump.
Ever been to one?! It involves everyone bringing a serving of their own chili recipe,
dumping it into a big pot, and community eating follows. Our community was the boys' school.
Justin and I (bravely) watched our boys spoon chili over hot dogs and partake, but we refrained
(I volunteered beforehand and couldn't help but share with him
some of the health code violations I observed).
We saw some pretty impressive chili recipes with big pieces of celery and other chili stuff....

However, I would like to thank ALDI for making my "homemade" chili.
I rocked the can opener 3 times to take our pot of
chili to dump.
Can I have another collective "eww" on this one?
PTO, I love ya, but let's move on to some other ideas for community togetherness, shall we?!

sooooo, let's move on to the rest of the weekend:

A little Decorating the Tree
(more than a handful of ornaments needed some
hot glue gun love by the end of the experience)

A little Bell Ringing at the Mall
(just a small way to have our kiddos think beyond themselves
especially this Christmas season)
A little Nativity Play (Fisher Price. Highly recommended.)
A little chewing on the true Reason for the Season
(hehe. But seriously: Christmas is about Jesus, and in the James house
that's what we keep reminding our kiddos...and ourselves...
if we should be tempted to forget.)
A little Chocolate making
(Jon takes his job of crushing the M&Ms seriously)

A little Peppermint Bark
A little Cherry Cordial Bark
A lot of chocolately goodness

Peppermint Bark:
*white chocolate almond bark
*few drops of peppermint extract
*crushed candycanes

Cherry Cordial Bark:
*milk chocolate almond bark
*marachino cherries, chopped
*cherry cordial M&Ms, chopped
*few drops of marachino cherry juice
Both recipes: melt chocolate and add extract or juice,
spread on wax-covered baking sheets. Sprinkle toppings on and cool in fridge.
Break into pieces.
{oh.my}
Other highlights of the weekend?
Justin running out and getting donuts for breakfast Saturday morning.
Bonus: the caramel mocha from McD's he surprised me with. Awww.
Ornament exchange party for the ladies of our church. Lots of food, fellowship, fun!
Family offering to babysit (thank you!)
so Justin and I could enjoy a kiddo-free dinner together
AND get our Christmas shopping done.
Bonus: watching God provide for us, once again, in an unexpected way. So cool.
Here's to keeping our eyes on Jesus this Christmas season.
He's an AWESOME reason to indulge in a little extra chocolate to celebrate a miraculous birth that lead to an incredible life that ultimately provided a way for us to have eternal life with Him.
Happy Monday, All!

Counting Down

Here's our advent calendar I mentioned yesterday. I got it a couple of years ago on "after-Christmas clearance" at....you'll never guess where...Starbucks.
What?! I know. It was a deal, it was just what I was looking for, and it was filled with truffles that I just knew--I just knew wouldn't be good the following Christmas (so I ate them up before I put it away for the year).
I think I may have even shared day #17's truffle with Justin.
Or something like that.

The boys get really excited to open the drawer, pull out the chocolate of the day, and turn the drawer around to reveal the picture.
fun stuff.
new topic....
Anyone joining me in craving a good BBQ meal in this (gross) cold weather?
BBQ Chicken and Cheesy Biscuits
SO easy...
Coat chicken in BBQ sauce (I used 5 large pieces and an entire bottle of sauce) and place in 9x13,
Bake @ 350 for 40 minutes
Place chicken to one end of pan, keeping BBQ sauce spread out over pan.
Place refrigerated biscuits in sauce, sides touching,
and sprinkle with cheddar cheese (yum)
Bake an add'l 12 minutes or until biscuits are done.
This meal is really about the amazing biscuits so make sure they are baked to perfection, ok?
Put on some sunglasses (or don't)
and sit down to eat this easy dinner that's reminiscent of the warmer... and longer
days of grilling out.
Only 109 days left until spring
But who's counting...
