winner. random birthing kids info.

WINNER!  WINNER!
yay for you!
To ALL of you commenters for GW:
thanks for all the smiles...
you all should have your own blog (hint, hint)
and make me smile everyday!

last night I made crockpot creamy chicken for
"Aunt Mindy Monday on Thursday" dinner
YUM
not as good as these crescants though
Nutella
I'm totally addicted

============================================
(random)
Laurie makes statements to Justin BEFORE kiddos:
1)  "I want 5 kids someday...that's how many fit in a mini van"
2)  "I never want to give birth to a child in February"

hmmmm....

#1--who cares how many seats are in the back of a mini van anyway
4 is good.  4 is even.

#2--Thank You, Jesus, for knowing me way better than I know myself.
I can't think of a better way to make me smile in the dreary month of February
than to celebrate my firstborn's birthday
(tomorrow)

Have a super Friday, All!
only 17 days left of Feburary.....but who's counting

trio. trifecta.

have you ever gone in search of that perfect present  for a kids birthday party
and had no idea what to get?!
TRIO blocks
I'd say the ideal age is 3-6
but as you can see....
the whole James fam approves

just checkin in today?  don't forget yesterday's
already entered?!
think of one more thing about yourself to make me smile
cause I'm a rule changer like that!

Have a super Thursday....
no matter the temp,
no matter the laundry that's piling up
no matter the snot pouring out of little kids noses in your home
that seems to have no end
or the lack of dinner ideas floating thru your mind
and the February Funk setting in
Boom.
Just make it super!

cozy (GIVEAWAY WEDNESDAY!)

Life is messy
And if I'm going to get messy
I'm glad to know you're beside me
I love how you take my February Funk kinda day
And turn it around with the silly game you made me play
And this crazy photo shoot that spontaneously erupted
And the answer I knew you'd give
when I asked you the question from Mom Time
Baby,
I love you like old people love chicken
But even more importantly
I love you more than I love chocolate
And....I know
I'm cooler than the flip side of your pillow
Booyah

I love you, Justin
(awwww)

GIVEAWAY WEDNESDAY!
Are these sweet or what?!
And the proceeds of these homemade goodies
support missions of a local church in my city
Double sweet.
Just leave me a comment.
Tell me something about yourself in an attempt to make me smile.

Really, all comments make me smile.

Happy, super GIVEAWAY WEDNESDAY, All!

Rock the Crock-- bbq 2 for 1

Let's Rock it
bbq chicken, crock style
(adapted by me from a taste of home recipe aug/sept '10 issue)
this is a recipe to be excited about BECAUSE...
it's a twofer
2 for 1, that is
make it once, enjoy it twice

(pretend there's a bottle of honey in the pic)
Here's what you need to mix up for the BBQ love:
2 Tbsp garlic powder
1 bottle your fav BBQ sauce
1 cup italian dressing
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup honey
Here's what you are going to pour the mixture over:
4-5 chicken chests (boneless, skinless)
*note*  I used frozen....yes, still frozen
1 red onion, sliced into thick rings
(thick because you're going to want to take them out at the end)
When it looks something like this
after rockin in the crock about
 6 hours on low
Remove the chicken from the crock
Shred easily with a fork
Return the chicken to it's BBQ love
Bake your potatoes at some point
Plan on about an hour @ 350
I drizzled mine with olive oil and some sea salt
(highly recommended)
You can figure out what to do from here...
Like a good Wisconsin girl I sprinkled some cheese on top
Cheese makes all things better, don't you think?
We're not a good leftover fam
So I froze the bbq chicken that was superfulous (sp) from our first dining experience
And I made bbq chicken subs a week or so later
Some provolone cheese,
some good (think: non generic) sub bread
Meal #2.  Boom.
And I didn't even do anything this time around but unfreeze the meat
I guess thaw is the word but unfreeze is what popped into my head
Anyone have some cider vinegar and Worcestershire sauce
just sittin around, waiting for that perfect recipe?
Look no further.

What do you say, Blogger B's...
Wanna ROCK the CROCK with me?!

Enjoy your tasty (tutorial) Tuesday!

that's what she said

MAMA
she said it
I heard it
Aunt Mindy can testify

Mama

so how bout this new look for the mama of the house?
I was in slight denial
about needing help to see el blogos I was reading,
but I kept finding myself making quirky faces like this....
so... in a quest to NOT scare my kiddos
with creepy computer faces
I bought these stunning beauties at Target for only $7.99
What a bargain.  I hope.
here's the really scary mommy face
note to self:  never (again) make that face and blog it
Mornings and Me--we don't mix well
have I ever mentioned that before?!
so basically most all mornings consist of cereal for my kids
if they're lucky I'll heat them up some water for gourmet instant oatmeal
but our SNOW DAY called for some fancy...
And nothing screams fancy
like preparations that begin the night before

Pull-Apart Breakfast Rolls
Here's your grocery list just in time for Saturday morning's breakfast:

Rhodes (frozen) rolls, chopped pecans
1 small pkg pudding mix
butter, brown sugar, cinnamon

Grease a b-b-bundt cake pan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding reference, anyone?)
Add chopped pecans, if desired (I sprinkle on half the pan)
Place 20 frozen Rhodes Dinner Rolls in pan
Sprinkle on rolls: 1 tsp cinnamon and 1 small pkg butterscotch pudding mix
Melt 1 stick butter and 1/2 c brown sugar and pour on top
Cover with plastic wrap and let sit OVERNIGHT
Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes in the morn

Notes:  do not be alarmed by how much the rolls grow while you sleep
the recipe calls for 18 rolls--whatever.  you can do 20.
I've been known to double the topping and pour some more on after baking
oh, yeah......

Have a super weekend, All!
Go Pack Go!
You'll want to stop on back to this here blog
sometime this celebratory weekend
to find a pic of Justin & Laurie circa 1998.
When I locate it, consider it posted.
Mercy.

buzz

"Matthias, will you please hold your head up for the picture?"
(I love how literal kids are!)

before the James boy buzz

after the James boy buzz

snow day = haircuts for the boyz of the house
(even Justin participated but I failed to snap pics of his before and after)
This pretty girl and I did not participate in the buzz cuts.
Charity is so close to crawling
and it's going to happen any. day. now.
Her world and mine is about to drastically change.
Mercy.

Happy (Snow-filled) Thursday, All!

spotlight on lisa (GW !! )

snow day
you know how you feel the need to stock up on essentials
before you get snowed in?
what is it about sending the hubs to the grocery store for a few needed items
and ending up with more than "the list"?!
but I'm not complaining about these fantastic cookies
we ate last night as we cozied in to watch
How To Train A Dragon

Well, today I have a treat for you all...
I'd like you to meet a friend of mine, and if you don't know her already,
her name is Lisa and she is the super fun mom of 2 a-mazing little girls
less than one year apart
(wow, right?!)
Mya and Laynie are 2 and 3 years old--full of energy and super engaging little girls because their mama pours lots and lots into them
Not only does she rock motherhood, but she is uber crafty as well...
She makes these adorable burp cloths and blogs about them here

She also makes a lot of good recipes that are easy on the budget and easy on time.  When I had Charity, she made dinners for her fam and then doubled the recipe for my fam (awww....so thoughtful!)
Check out this one she made for us the night before Charity was born.

And Lisa's blog also has a tutorial for you if your fridge could use a nice little makeover.  You're going to want to check out these magnets that are fun and fun to make.

WELL, if you haven't done a little hopping over to her blog yet, you are definitely going to want to check out her post today
Because her super crafty self has been at it again and this time
she's SHAR-ING.
GIVEAWAY WEDNESDAY, Blogger B's!  Over on Lisa's blog!
So...leave her some comment love and let her know you have checked out her blog for a chance to win her Valentine craft.

Because, don't you know, Valentines Day is only 12 days away.....

how I do it: LAUNDRY

you know what's funny about laundry
besides for absolutely nothing (esp if you have small children)
the fact that it's been a hot topic on some blogs I've been reading lately.
Everyone seems to be asking the same question
how do you keep up with the beast?!
boy, if I had an answer....
but you know what I've found?  when you share tips about how you do things like this, sometimes you help people.
so, with that in mind, I thought I'd share my method
with huge hopes that maybe you'd share a tip or two with me
cause anyone who can keep up with laundry is a rockstar and don't you know that's what I'm aiming for in life
rockstar mom,
rockstar wife,
rockstar follower of Jesus....
I'd take any of those titles you'd throw at me.
but for now I'll settle with just throwing some laundry tips your way to hopefully lighten your load
(boy, that was a dumb pun)

LAUNDRY THE LAURIE WAY
*live in denial first
*then deal with it because you realize no one else is going to
*do one load (almost) every single day--fill washer up when you wake up, transfer at naptime or mid-morning, and unload when complete (or when you remember)
*mix lights and darks and wash in cold water (come on, don't be afraid of this.  I do it all the time and only occassionally regret turning white things a light shade of pink.  BLEACH, people)
*hazardous-to-your-health stained articles of clothing are handled separately and with great caution...and you know what I mean by that, esp if you're a mom of wee ones
*quickly but gently layer clothing in basket when you unload from dryer as to not (really) wrinkle stuff
(note to wives w/hubbys who wear dress shirts--HELLO.  you are aware that there are wrinkle-free shirts out there, right?!  those are the only ones allowed in this girl's laundry pile...)
*let clean baskets of clothing pile up until a designated folding day
*folding day = brace yourself.  your laundry now has accumulated. but (yay) it's clean laundry
First, pick a large area to make lots of piles so there's no need to "re-sort" (couch, bed, etc)
In my method each person in the fam has separate piles for pants, tops, pjs, and nicer clothing so when I go to put it away, it's already in the right piles for putting in the dresser drawers.  I keep a basket nearby for socks and you-know-whats and I just throw it in there to sort at the end
(p.s. Hanes socks have writing on the bottom in different colors for different sizes.  HELLO.  this has revolutionized my sock sorting time and yes, I'll pay the little extra for name brand so I can have some sanity)

I have done this method for awhile so I can pump out "folding day" pretty quickly.....like a machine, people.
Did I mention folding day includes t.v. viewing of MY choice (yes, even if the kiddos are awake and at home--I'm folding. laundry.....let's not downplay the significance of that statement....and yes, now my boys know who Rachael Ray and Paula Dean and the Barefoot Contessa are.  That's really going to make them good hubbies one day, don't you think?!...)
Or I call a friend when I conquer the load(s) during naptime.  What a great way to catch up and not feel guilty about an hour-long chat with a good friend!

Why do I follow the Laurie Laundry Way?
My name is Laurie.
And I like this method because instead of dirty laundry piling up and stressing me out, it's the clean laundry that piles up (because who doesn't have the pile up somewhere?!  I'm no super woman!)
If somebody really needs something, it's probably washed and ready to wear we just have to do a little searching for it.
Folding Day is not fun, but it gets done all at once and I'm serious about doing something fun while it's all getting done.
(It's like eating chocolate as a reward after you've scrubbed the toilet.  Ewww. Nope.  That's actually the one time when chocolate has absolutely no appeal to me...)

AND if I just can't get around to sorting the socks at the end, I keep a nice basket of it and just tell my boys to "GO FISH" if they claim they have no clean socks left.
I'm pretty sure they believe it's a game by now.
Well, I hope, at least.
Cause nothing is changing in this house anytime soon.
How about you?!  Surely you've got some kind of tip to lighten all of our laundry loads because having our kids wear dirty underwear is not as funny as it sounds.

Happy (Tutorial) Tuesday, All!
